Eleanor L. Sullivan, 69, a longtime dedicated Anchorage civic booster and well-known banker, died at Providence Hospital last night following a long bout with cancer.
She celebrated her 25th anniversary as a member of the staff at the First National Bank of Anchorage last July.
At the time of her death she was an assistant vice president in the areas of advertising, marketing. and community affairs.
. A bank spokesman said this morning Miss Sullivan had worked until January, even though the cancer from which she had suffered had taken its physical toll prior to that time.
She had undergone major surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., 18 months ago.
She was active in a large number of civic endeavors. particularly in connection with t he Anchorage Concert Association, the Alaska Festival of Music, the Soroptimist Club. the Business and Professional Women's' Club, Greater Anchorage Inc., Holy Family Cathedral, Altar SocIety, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and Catholic Daughters of America.
Mrs, Warren Cuddy, chairman of the board of the First National Bank of Anchorage, said this morning, "There's so much one could say about Eleanor. But I think I'd like to talk about her wonderful spirit , and who went to see her came away with that spirit. She carried that same sort of spirit in her job at the bank.
"She had so much courage,", Mrs. Cuddy saId.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
She was born July 20, 1907, in Heron Lake, Minn. She attended Heron Lake High School, St. Theresa College in Winona, Mn.. and Mankato, Minn., Business College.
She had banking experience prior to moving to Anchorage in 1950. chiefly with the Second National Bank in Boston, Mass., and the National Bank of Commerce in Seattle.
She was on Anchorage's first Red Carpet Committee and was among those welcoming passengers aboard Scandinavian Airlines Service and Air France inaugural polar flights. She also was the first woman to be elected to the board of the local Chamber of Commerce.
Among survivors are a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and John Pappas of Anchorage. She also leaves brothers John Sullivan of The Dalles, . Ore., Sylvester and Donald Sullivan of Heron Lake, Minn. , and sisters Mrs. Genevieve Markert of Redondo Beach, Calif., Mary Sullivan and Geraldine DeMuth, both of
Mankato, Minn., Dorothy Reutter of Leominster, Mass., . and Mrs. Russell Schmidt of Neptune, N.J.
